This fun activity is actually quite relaxing to all. As a bonus, using the dropper to drop “honey” into the hexagons is an activity that not only reinforces learning about bees and their hives, but is wonderful for practicing fine motor skills!

My younger children are desperately wanting to master the art of using their (kid-safe) scissors; something that requires one’s fine motor skills to “bee” quite adept. Simple activities like this one, help my kiddos practice the fine motor skills needed get them one step closer to using those scissors!
Simple SUPPLIES NEEDED:
- Silicone Hotpad with hexagon shaped cavities (I bought mine off Amazon, similar to these, but they can also be found elsewhere in multiple colors.)
- Dropper (I used a clean dropper that came with a bottle of infant gas drops, but droppers can also be purchased on Amazon in regular (small) sizes, here, and medium sized (great for toddlers), here. For toddlers who are just developing their “dropper” fine motor skills, I highly recommend jumbo sized droppers (I purchase on amazon, but again, they can be purchased elsewhere.)
- Water (in a small bowl or cup)
- Plate (optional)…for putting under hotpad to prevent accidental spills. Find non-breakable plates, here.
- Yellow or Gold Food Coloring (Optional).…this can be added to the water and make it look like honey. (I do not currently do this option with my younger kiddos in an effort to avoid cleaning up inevitable food color stains. 😉
That supply list above appears way longer than it actually is; due to all my little notes added. But, in reality, you need just 3 things:

As they sit down in preparation to start dropping “Honey” into the “Hive,” I often like to show my kiddos a page from this book, which has a great photograph of actual bees on honey filled combs….I just do this to re-enforce what we are current learning in our bee unit study, and help the younger of my kiddos to “connect the dots” in relating this activity to that of bees filling their honeycombs with honey!

This fun, honeycomb dropper activity is a wonderful opportunity to sit down and relax….for ALL ages! Visitors young and old, cannot help but drop a few dropletts of “honey” into the hive….for the purpose of “testing only”, of course! 😉
